Wrongly Accused, at Riker’s Island

Shane Rhooms knows a little bit about Rikers Island; he spent 18 days there back in December of last year.

It Wasn’t Me

Initially, Shane was accused of firing off gunshots at police officers.  Allegedly they caught him enjoining some marijuana in the wee hours of September 6.  After learning that he was ‘wanted’, this 22 year old young man obligingly turned himself in.  Three separate officers identified him as being the man who fired shots at them; he was sent to Rikers Island and faced the maximum penalty...  Life imprisonment.  But two things came to Shane Rhooms’ rescue; a capable defense attorney  and technology.

What Can Your New York Criminal Defense Attorney Do For You?

What Shane’s attorney did for him was to set about proving that it was not his client that shot at police.  His client was, in fact, somewhere else entirely at the time of the incident.  The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office had a Webster Hall surveillance video which showed Shane and his cousin enjoying a reggae concert in the club at the time in question.  Rhoom’s New York criminal defense attorney got hold of it. In addition to the video Shane’s lawyer provided the court with cell phone records to showing calls that ran through cell towers in Manhattan while he was supposedly breaking the law in Brooklyn.  The proof was overwhelming and the Brooklyn DA’s Office had no choice but to dismiss the case; but not until after Shane spent 18 days at Rikers.  Sadly, during this whole ugly mess, the young man’s grandmother passed away; and he was not able to attend the funeral.

Though Police Commissioner Ray Kelly states that the NYPD still stands behind his three officers, Shane is a free man.  A civil lawsuit is being filed in his behalf against New York’s finest.
